Pianist Ferruccio Busoni was hailed as one of the greatest performers of the early twentieth century, an outstanding musician who also composed and arranged music. This project examines the role of the performer as composer through a live recording of Busoni's second violin sonata. It seeks to provide fresh insight into the interpretation of Busoni's work, informed by research on another virtuosic performer and composer, violinist George Enescu. Enescu's recorded performances of his own works and the parallel careers of these two artists prompt further re-examination of compositions by eminent performers.
