Earthquakes in countries such as Nepal have caused widespread damage and loss of life, largely due to the lack of well-designed building stock. Furthermore, research into earthquake-proofing of structures is weighted towards highly technical, expensive solutions that are not appropriate in all contexts. As such, there is a need for investigation into seismic strengthening techniques that are low-cost, sustainable and easy to construct, whilst still working cohesively with local building vernacular. Our research focussed on the application of bamboo for seismic reinforcement, with the goal of reducing casualties during future quake events in Nepal.
