This HTML document contains supplementary data for the journal article Exploratory study of sugar and C6 compounds in single berries of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) cv. Cabernet Sauvignon throughout ripening. Although the scope of the study was to explore the relationship between berry developmental stages and the composition of grapes, berry-to-berry variation at all developmental stages was found showing that each berry is ultimately following a singular ripening programme. Therefore, we considered it appropriate to provide data for each individual berry using interactive plots to support the data summary plots presented in the manuscript. The plotly package in R was used to produce interactive plots.

Abbreviations and symbols

  • TSS = Total Soluble Solids (in °Brix)
  • FW = Fresh Weight (in g)
  • Stages of development are coded as follows:
    • B0 : Baseline (green berries at the end of lag phase)
    • D1 : green hard
    • D2 : green soft
    • D3 : pink/blush
    • D4 : purple//red
    • D5 : blue (< 20 °Brix)
    • D6 : blue ( 20-24 °Brix)
    • D7 : blue (≥ 24 °Brix)
    • SH1 : shrivelled (< 30 °Brix)
    • SH2 : shrivelled (≥ 30 °Brix)

Interactive plots

User tips

Interactive plots allow the reader to select, highlight and search data using specific commands. For each plot, a series of actions may be taken; the most useful of these are briefly explained here below for readers who are not familiar with this type of data visualization.

  • In the normal display mode, data for each single berry (i.e. a single point) are displayed in a text box when the pointer overlaps;
  • Click on a class of development in the legend (right side of each plot) to show/hide berries of that class;
  • Use the pointer to zoom into areas of interest and double click to return to the whole-plot display mode;
  • Further actions can be taken from the panel located in the top right corner of the interactive plot:
    • zoom into the panel;
    • perform box or lasso selection of data;
    • show projections of a point on x and y axes;
    • show data of berries displaying a similar value of the x axis.

Interactive plot 1

Interactive Plot 1. The relationship between sugar content (mg/berry) estimated from sugar concentration by enzyme assay and berry FW data and TSS in individual grape berries at multiple stages of development sampled throughout the entire ripening stage (n = 256). Each point shows values for a single berry and is coloured according to the stage of development coded as follows: B0 (baseline), D1 (green hard), D2 (green soft), D3 (pink/blush), D4 (purple/red), D5 (blue, < 20 °Brix), D6 (blue, 20-24 °Brix), D7 (blue, ≥ 24 °Brix), SH1 (shrivelled, < 30 °Brix), SH2 (shrivelled, ≥ 30 °Brix).

Interactive plot 2

Interactive Plot 2. Scatterplots of the content per berry (in µg/berry) of C6 compounds and berry TSS (n = 136) at various stages of development and sampling dates.

Interactive plot 3

Interactive Plot 3. Scatterplots of the concentration per berry (in µg/g berry) of C6 compounds and berry TSS (n = 136) at various stages of development and sampling dates.

Interactive plot 4

Interactive Plot 4. The relationship between the sugar concentration (g/L) measured by enzymatic assay and the TSS measured on the juice of individual berries at multiple stages of development and collected weekly throughout ripening (n = 256). Each point shows values for a single berry and is coloured according to (i) berry classes (top) and (ii) sampling dates (bottom) respectively.

Interactive plot 5

Interactive Plot 5. Scatterplots of the berry concentration of C6 compounds and berry FW (n = 136) at various stages of development and sampling dates.
